Life drawing, two ways
The same pose in watercolour and in pencil, and what each one teaches.

I trained in Drawing and Print, and life drawing was a constant through it. These two studies are the same seated pose: one in loose watercolour, one in pencil.
Watercolour first
The watercolour is about mass and warmth. Red and ochre washes find the figure and the draped block in a few minutes, and the white of the paper does most of the work for the light.
Then pencil
The pencil study is about structure. The same pose is rebuilt in line and hatching, with the weight of the body on the block and the hands resting in the lap.
Both studies are in the traditional artwork section of the gallery.
